Fly The Flag Week Launched Today

24th June, 2019
Fly The Flag week launched this morning with an event at Somerset House in London. A giant flag featuring Ai Weiwei’s symbol of the footprint was lifted by hundreds of people from arts organisations, human rights charities and local schools, accompanied by a new song written by Michael Morpurgo to the tune of protest song Bread & Roses.

Flags are flying across the UK and internationally – from the Liberty HQ and Young Vic in London, to Manchester Jewish Museum & National Museums Liverpool, via National Theatre Wales in Tenby, to St Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn and as far as Mexico.

Events continued in Covent Garden Piazza as the Donmar’s Writing Wrongs project took to the streets with live performances of pieces written by young people and community groups inspired by what universal human rights means to them.

Tonight at 7.30pm, artists and human rights campaigners come together at Sadler’s Wells to discuss the relationship between the arts and human rights. Events continue throughout the week, to find out more visit the Events & Activities section of the website.
